Jumbo Chair Flaunts Floating Upholstered Seat Within Bold Metal Frame

Reimagines the concept and design of cantilever chairs

Alain Gilles collaborates with the Italian furnishing brand, MOGG design, to launch the Jumbo chair collection at Salone del Mobile this year. The chair collection reimagines the concept and design of cantilever chairs. Offering a fresh and bold vision, the frame defines the structure within which the upholstered seat appears to float.

The frame is not made from thin, bent tubes, which is typical of such designs. A large, distinctive metal tube defines the entire structure, giving it the architectural clarity, moving away from traditional thin-legged designs. The upholstered seat is positioned within the large metal frame in a way that makes it appear to float, creating a visual tension between the solid structure and the soft seating.

Gilles’ signature style often incorporates a bit of graphic energy, making the chair look different and interesting from every angle. The design plays with continuous lines where the seat appears to flow into a singular loop.

The backrest is not attached to the structure and barely rests on the curved back. Featuring a slight curve, the backrest is intended to complement the tube’s curves.

Available in a wide array of upholstery options, the chair allows customization between the padded seat, which features seven large ribs, and the prominent tubular frame, which looks like two separate cushions stitched together.

Pairing a fresh, bold look, Gilles plays with optical balance by creating a dialogue among warmth, graphics, and design. The Jumbo chair for MOGG is an intriguing piece, making complex designs feel effortless and human.
