Everyone who has been to the Jersey Shore must have seen or heard of Lucy the Elephant. Lucy, a historic member of Jersey Shore culture, stands six-story tall in Margate City. This oldest surviving roadside attraction in the United States was recently rented out on Airbnb for a short-term iconic stay of three nights.

Merely five miles away from Atlantic City, the 138-year-old wood and tin elephant was listed on Airbnb, presenting an opportunity to the admirers of this beautiful structure to stay inside it.

The grand bed, sculptures, and vibrant flower arrangements inside Lucy take the visitors back to the glorious Victorian era. The howdah (carriage) at the top offers a gorgeous and unique view of Margate’s Atlantic City skyline, the beach, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Now a National Landmark, Lucy was built in the 1880s by Irish-American inventor James V. Lafferty to promote real estate sales and attract tourists.

Since then this structure, which is older than the Statue of Liberty, has been attracting thousands of tourists every year. After its construction, Lucy has served as a tavern, a private home, and a hotel – in fact, she once served as hostess to the former President Woodrow Wilson.

Airbnb partnered with the nonprofit Save Lucy Committee to list the landmark on the website as part of a tradition of short-term, iconic stays, which has previously seen the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile and Mattel’s Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse go out for rent. The committee hoped to raise awareness about Lucy and restore the landmark to glory.

The short-term rental company offered Lucy to two guests for $138 a night for three days. It was immediately booked after the reservation became available on March 5.

However, for those who missed the opportunity to spend a night inside the Jersey Shore landmark, there are 30-minute guided tours available all year-round.
