Michael Young, one of UK’s most sought-after young designers has recently designed a furniture collection for Gallery ALL in Los Angeles and Beijing. Dubbed MY Collection, it was first showcased at Design Miami/Basel 2019. It consists of a chair, a side table, a writing desk, a round coffee table, a console, and a lounge chair; all made of polished stainless steel with white enamel.
Each furniture from the MY Collection comprises a cluster of hollow metal extrusions capped at each end and covered with enamel. This way, a kind of Voronoi diagram is sculpted on each piece, which cannot be replicated easily. The pattern is not just a surface decoration, it is integral to the structure and form. The design is formed from the structure, rather than a superficial subjective intervention as with traditional methods.
The designer explains,
The metal is molded around huge clay forms, and the internal structure is created over several weeks. It is completely artisanal, and there is no other way to produce this than with historical methods combined with contemporary craft techniques.
Making use of metal on clay not only creates a unique aesthetic but also makes furniture strong and durable. There may be a variety of designer furniture available in the market, but the Voronoi pattern and shiny edges of this furniture collection make them truly unique and work of art.
