Vase designs have evolved to the point where they are often seen as sculptures. A prime example is the unique transparent vases made from natural materials by a Japanese designer at the 2025 Milan Design Week. Another eye-catching design is the Blurry Memories installation by Oculta Studio, which features a series of three shape-shifting vases that dynamically change beyond their original forms.

The designer has re-imagined historical vases, often displayed behind glass in museums, into dynamic pieces that transform their structure from within. These vases take entirely new forms, just like you may have seen in the Transformers movie. The gear-like grooves are visible within the objects that help them take new shapes.

The designer has created these vases in three colors. The first one looks like a normal ceramic pot with a floral pattern, the second one features orange and black color scheme, and the last one looks like a bronze vase with green patina developed over time.

The shape-shifting vases explore different themes, including Fragments of Time, which explores ever-changing history and memory; and Illusion of Permanence, which reflects on objects thought to be eternal but are constantly transforming. All the mobile elements symbolize fluidity of time, while the brass vase with a unique finish showcases textures of memory.

These kinetic vases break the idea of fixed shapes by using moving parts that change their form. The vases show that things change over time, both in shape and meaning.
