Munich-based designer Ao Zhou of the Meso Design creative agency, founded by Connie Zhou and Reiten Cheng, has a knack for creating designs that bridge the gap between the object and the user. He desires to pursue the essentiality and purity of forms as reflected by his Oh Chair readers’ lounge. The design of the chair incorporates a beautiful bent wire base that reminds of the basic outline of a classic paperclip, followed by an open design.
Transcending the traditional idea of furniture, Oh Chair is a modern take on the iconic Egg Chair with an elemental twist. The contrast is conspicuous. Where the classic Egg Chair has a closed design, the chair flaunts an open design, facilitating connectivity with the surroundings and the elements of the chair.
Bringing the user and the object closer, the essence lies in its visual lightness that mimics the organic fluidity of a drifting paper, making the chair easy to access, comfortable, and lightweight. It is perfect for open spaces. You can set it up by a sun-draped window for an immersive reading session and enjoy the comfort of this exquisite chair.
Its curved seating and round cushioned back hug the body without straining it, underlining the ergonomics. There is also a clever storage cavity at the base of the seating where books can be stored. The chair features an outer shell made from 100 percent recyclable polyethylene, fabric upholstery, and stainless steel.

The design process includes the use of artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC), which allows the chair to showcase the designer’s perspective on AI. However, the challenge was to generate a design that is future-ready but also incorporates the human touch and follows the legacy of the timeless design. This profound exploration resulted in an aesthetically pleasing and functional piece of furniture that is tactile and visually striking.
Drawing inspiration from Munich, known to be the birthplace of Stable Diffusion, this chair seamlessly juxtaposes timeless, modern, functional, and visually tangible design in a singular piece. Incorporating distinct elements of human and AI, the Oh Chair has been awarded the Iron A’ Design Award at the prestigious A’ Design Award 2024.
