+POOL: A Kickstarter project by Family and Play Lab promises to clean the East River Water of NYC

The beautiful city of New York is known for its spectacular skyline and breathtaking landscapes, but is also popular due to the pollution, especially the water pollution. Water pollution in the major rivers of the city like, the Hudson River and the east river is catastrophic to the aquatic life and is so much polluted that people who enjoyed swimming in the clear waters of these watercourses few years back are now scared to even go near them as the water in it stinks badly. The East river, which separates Manhattan and Bronx from Queens and Brooklyn makes for a gorgeous landscape against the shimmering city skyline. But now this river water is so much polluted due to sewage spillage that it has started killing the under water life which ultimately can be sensed as a strong disgusting smell in the air. A public pool dubbed as the Plus Pool (+ POOL) can solve this big problem of the New Yorkers.

A project designed  by the Family and Play Lab, the Plus Pool, is nothing but a public swimming pool made of glass floating in the waters of the East River. The pool tends to filter the waters of the polluted river and make it clean for visitors and of course the localities to swim in the water, take a look at the river conditions and also take the pleasure of the spectacular view of the city skyline.  According to the designers  the +POOL filters the very water on which it floats. The project clears the water by virtue of the layered filtration system, which also removes the bacteria and contaminants from the water making it clean and swimmable. After being filtered by the +Pool, the water of the river tends to meet the water standards of the city and state and ensures the use of no chemicals, no additives just clean natural river water.

The designer team helps a lot in solving the city’s water pollution issues as according to them their project will be able to clean up to half of a million gallons of the river water in a single day. The pool is created in the shape of a + sign where each of the four quarters serving as a swimming pool for swimmers of different types including sports, kids, laps and lounge. For implementing their project, the Family and Play Lab team is collecting funds as they require approximately $250,000 to see the +POOL in action by mid of 2016. If you are interested to fund $199, then you will get a chance to mark your name on one of the tiles around the corners of the pool and if you want the tile in a particular color then you would have to pay a little more. However if the team is able to achieve the required money, then they would afloat a small prototype amidst the river water to help people see how the project will work.

Sadly, water pollution is not only a problem in NYC. If projects like plus pool are integrated into polluted rivers all over the world, then we can possibly swim in clean waters and also preserve the otherwise dying under water life. Check out the video below to see how the Plus Pool functions.
