There are numerous wearable air conditioners on the market but since my colleagues think this can be the Tesla of personal air conditioning, I decided to probe it a little. I’ll begin with the design and then move on to the technical aspect to make the chronology clear.

Dubbed QOOLA, the wearable air conditioner is made with comfortable and durable material that makes it easier for users to wear on the neck, without feeling suffocated. The company doesn’t state the material used but calls it lightweight and flexible.

Weighing 0.41lbs, the wearble air conditioner appears pretty much the same as any other personal air fan. However, what sets this one apart from the others is its flexible neckband that can be adjusted at any angle suitable for use with different clothes and neck sizes.

QOOLA features four cooling modes: 25, 21, 18, 15-degree Celsius and as many heating modes 38, 40, 42, 45-degree Celsius that would keep you cool during summers and warm in winters. It is operable by a simple push of a button. No connected options are detailed; so no smartphone controls on the go, sorry!

The company however mentions that the wearable air conditioner works on dual air conditioner technology (DACT). There is an advanced built-in IC chip and powerful turbines that are responsible for the cooling and heating. A semiconductor heats or cools the air – as required – while the powerful turbines gushing the air out ensure instant change in temperature.

QOOLA thrives on this idea of instant heating and cooling system (IHCS) or what the company mentions as the temperature conductive system. The stainless steel plates on either end of the headphone-like wearable air conditioner provide a cool sensation to your body instantly.  Steel is purposely used for its high thermal conductivity and reflectivity as compared to other metals.

Unlike traditional personal ACs, QOOLA doesn’t have fans but an inventive combination of turbines and steel to function effectively. This combo deems it less noisy despite offering maximum cooling or heating.

QOOLA also features an ion purifier that is responsible for eliminating contaminants and generating purified air for you to inhale. The entire combination of heating, cooling, and air purification can be delivered for about 5-6 hours on a single charge, the company notes. The dust and splash-proof air conditioner sports 30W fast charging and can be charged via USB-C.

QOOLA is presently available for preorder through Kickstarter. You can book a personal air conditioner and air purifier for $67 (HK$538). With a surfeit of features and innovative cooling technology, would it be the next big wearable air conditioner on the market? Only time will tell.
