For the past few days, the blogosphere has been abuzz with the Quilt Heat Pump, so I decided to check out the appliance in detail.
The flagship product from a startup called ‘Quilt’ not only heats and cools your room but also offers a customizable design that blends with the interior. A question then arises, with loads of heat pumps around, what makes the Quilt Heat Pump worth all the attention? Well, it’s the prominence that has garnered everyone’s notice. The Quilt is invented, designed, and promoted by a team of ex-Google, Apple, Nest, Tesla, and Airbnb employees; together I’d like to refer to them as the ‘The Nexus of Exes’.
The Nexus of Exes not only touts the Quilt as the ‘smartest and most advanced home climate solution to accelerate the energy transition’ but also speaks highly of how the product has the potential to decrease your electricity bills.
“Quilt Intelligence makes our system more efficient than anything available on the market today. Features like occupancy detection, schedules, and temperature preconditioning help save energy and lower your monthly electric bill,” states the company. When it comes to saving energy, I would advocate any product that is a little kinder to the environment and that is where Quilt excels.
Moving to the design, the modern heat pump is a single system comprising four parts: an indoor unit, an outdoor unit, a compact smart thermostat (Quilt Dial), and a mobile app. The outdoor unit is rated at a powerful 18,000 BTUs and can maintain 90 percent of its heating capacity at -13 degrees Fahrenheit. On the flip side, each indoor unit can pump out 9,000 BTUs. Then, there’s an app and a thermostat dial from which users can control and set temperatures throughout the house.

“The refrigerant that flows through the system, R-32, has a lower global warming potential than the more widely used R-410a,” mentions the company. This is what makes the Quilt an efficient performer. Another impressive aspect of the Quilt Heat Pump is its customizable design. Unlike the boring HVAC systems, Quilt flaunts a sleek and stylish body that can be customized with oak wood veneer. And that’s not it! Quilt even lets you paint the front panel of the indoor unit to meld with the surroundings and features built-in accent lighting – in the indoor unit – which adds to its aesthetic appeal.
As reported by Tech Crunch, Quilt raised $33 Million Series A funding to help launch the heat pump, which is likely to retail for $6,500. For this amount, you get a Quilt Heat pump with free installation. The company is already taking pre-orders through its website and installations in the San Francisco area would begin in late summer.
