The Cube One lamp is a simple yet attractive lighting system crafted from a metal frame and sustainable plant-based materials using 3D printing technologies. California-based lighting manufacturer Gantri was commissioned by vintage furniture dealer Rarify to create this unique lighting system. The lamp combines 3D-printed panels with modular metallic frame components from Swiss furniture studio USM Haller.

Owing to the modular nature of the Cube One, the user can stack or connect multiple cube-shaped lights to create larger lighting fixtures such as floor lamps. The shiny metal frame pairs well with 3D printed panels to offer a warm, pleasing illumination. The panels are 3D-printed using a Gantri-made sugarcane-based plant polymer and are designed to be removed for sustainable disposal and making the USM frame reusable again.

As explained by the maker, “The lamp is built as an infinitely expandable modular system, capable of evolving into furniture, larger lamps, hanging fixtures, illuminated walls, or architecture-scale installations.” The lighting system combines vintage and contemporary components with digital manufacturing techniques to create more affordable and sustainable design.

Cube One is Rarify’s first in-house designed product, while it is manufactured with Gantri Made, a digital platform that aims to mass-produce lighting of any designer with minimal risk and in a sustainable way. It makes lighting production within reach for smaller design studios by utilizing a print-to-order system that lowers costs and reduces material waste.

The Rarify x Gantri light was on display during NYCxDesign in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, with an installation directed by local designer Matt Pecina of Studio Guapo. It is now available to pre-order for a price tag of about $600 at Rarify’s official website.
