Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the most notable designers and architects. His design footprints and philosophy are conspicuous through his masterpieces like Gordon House, Herbert Katherine Jacobs House, Seth Peterson Cottage, and more, marked as Usonian Homes. It is not just his iconic designs but his ideals have been reimagined and reinterpreted from time to time to celebrate his undying legacy through modern furniture. Recently, Michigan-based Steelcase in the collaboration with Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has launched Rockford + Galesburg collection, reflecting Wright’s “Organic architecture” philosophy.
Reimagining his mid-century Usonian design style, the collection is infused with modernity and elegance, suitable for home and office settings. First is the Rockford collection that features lounge chairs priced at $2100, polygonal plywood tables priced at $2300, and nesting ottomans priced at $485.
It is inspired by the famed Laurent House, considered one of Frank’s famous works. The only home he designed in 1952 to be wheelchair accessible for a veteran Kenneth Laurent and his wife in Rockford, Illinois. The furniture featured in the house reflected Wright’s human-first approach, which is beautifully replicated in the Rockford collection.
Formed in wooden structure and draped in supple upholstery, the collection displays organic shapes, forms, and lively silhouettes, combining functionality and aesthetics.
The use of plywood has been recurring in Wright’s works, favored for its affordability and accessibility. To that accord, the Rockford collection celebrates the intrinsic beauty of the material with its grainy textures left untouched and quite conspicuous on the edges of the table.
Underlining the ergonomics, the lounge chair has a curved back that effortlessly hosts the back of a sitter to give a pleasurable sitting experience. The curved back is adorned with a back pillow reshaped to accentuate comfort, whereas, the nesting ottomans and table follow Frank Lloyd’s original design concept. The collection has striking shapes accessible from any angle, making them human-efficient and suitable for professional and personal uses.
Ideating on a similar philosophy, second in the lineup is the Galesburg collection featuring a sofa priced at $5860, a lounge chair priced at $2400, and an ottoman costing $1480. Drawing on the Usonian principles, the collection is tactile, visually tangible, and meant for modern environments.
Inspired by Frank Lloyd’s built-in banquets from his numerous Usonian homes around Galesburg, Michigan, the collection is reintroduced in standalone pieces. Steelcase uses the earlier drawings of Wright’s tuxedo-style sofa to recreate the highlighting Galesburg sofa. It is formed in sculptural block panels with meticulous edging and a distinctive platform base in plywood and oak. The material has been the star of the collection, highlighted for its durability and aesthetic appeal.

It is straightforward in approach with clutter-free lines and appealing geometric shapes, reflecting Wright’s architectural finesse. To invite comfort and luxury, the collection is draped in neat upholstery in eclectic colors.
Paired with a lounge chair and ottoman, the collection becomes a highly functional and breathtaking sight in modern homes and work settings. Each piece in the Rockford + Galesburg collection seamlessly adapts to the present needs and comfort. It keeps intact the perennial quality of historical design and architectural familiarity even in contemporary times.
