In an effort to lower its overall environmental footprint, consumer electronics giant Samsung has announced that it will introduce new eco-friendly packaging for its Lifestyle TV product portfolio. The new Serif, The Frame and The Sero TV range will be first to opt for this new packaging made from eco-friendly corrugated cardboard. With this new material, the company wants customers to recycle cardboard boxes more purposefully.

Kangwook Chun, Executive Vice President and Head of Product Strategy Team of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics said;

Consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand that shares similar fundamentals and values as they do, and with our eco-packaging, we believe that we can provide our customers with a new experience that considers the environment as an important way to express themselves.

The cardboard packaging boxes have a dot matrix design on each side, making it easier to cut the boxes and repurpose them in different ways, such as a small end table, magazine rack or a tiny pet house.

The company will provide an instruction manual for customers to guide them on how to make useful and functional household items out of these cardboard boxes. This manual will be accessed by scanning the QR code on the box.

Earlier this year, Samsung won CES 2020 Innovation Awards for its eco-packaging concept. Looking into the launch of the new packaging, Samsung has partnered up with British design magazine Dezeen. They are organizing “Samsung Out of the Box Competition”- a global design challenge that kicked off on April 6.

The contest challenges designers to innovate new objects for homes that can be made from repurposing cardboard packaging. Most unique and practical designs will be awarded and also stand a chance to be applied to Samsung’s eco-packaging manual.
