Over a year ago, one of my colleagues became obsessed with Deniz Aktay’s designs. He started scouring the internet for more information on the young German designer. Alas, he couldn’t find much about the conceptual artist and he set out to interview Aktay about his creations. His tenacity resulted in him interviewing Deniz where my colleague talked to him about his design philosophy and the use of modern-day tech in hyper-realistic projects.
At first, I didn’t understand my friend’s fascination with the conceptual designer’s work. Sure, some of his designs were intriguing but I still didn’t get it. A year later, I see how Aktay’s approach to design has so many people in thrall. For him “finding the right harmony between proportion, material, and functionality” is crucial. “This goes with my demand for simplicity, originality, proper element joining, detailing, and appropriate use of the materials involved,” he says.
Another simple yet elegant piece of furniture by Deniz Aktay came along my way and it just clicked. How beautifully designed furniture, which is mundane in its looks and serves the basic function of a side table, can add a sense of calm to a chaotic space. The latest project that came from Aktay is the Scissor side table, a minimal metallic piece that can be transported with ease.
Although slightly quaint in its nominal form, the Scissor side table surely must have taken a lot of attention while designing. The quirky table boasts a round metal tabletop that is hoisted up by a single bright red metal tube. With the bold hue of the infinite tube, the table will add a pop of color to any room. The tube also serves as a handle that you can hold while moving the table around.

Looking like a scissor, the side table provides a stark metallic presence and a striking character. Where bulky wooden side tables can hinder much space and be back-breaking to move, the compact and space-saving design of the Scissor side table is perfect for compact apartments and people favoring downsized lifestyle.
I can definitely see the appeal of Aktay’s designs that have left people in awe of his work. Not only his designs are attractive they are highly functional in modern régime!
