If you live in a noisy city apartment or struggle with irregular sounds that disturb your sleep, the Sonify Shield could be an effective solution. It is an adaptive sound-masking system designed to block external noise such as traffic, sirens, and footsteps by turning walls and windows into active noise-masking barriers. It uses microphones to identify incoming sounds and generates frequency-matched masking at roughly half the volume of traditional white noise machines.
The Sonify Shield comprises a base station and surface exciters. The base station houses the AI processor and microphones to detect external noise, while exciters are small transducers that stick to walls or windows for using those surfaces to vibrate and emit adaptive sound-masking frequencies to block incoming sound. They work on drywall, wood, plaster, and windows. For optimal coverage, the company recommends one exciter per window and two to four exciters for a 12 x 12-foot wall, or you can get additional units for larger spaces or improved performance.
This system is designed for proactive noise blocking. Unlike traditional white noise machines that play a constant sound, it is designed to “listen” and adapt its output to specific incoming disturbances. Testing shows it blocks noise at roughly half the volume of a typical nightstand machine.
As explained by the maker, they have used physical exciters so the sound comes from the wall or window itself, not from a speaker next to your bed. That lets you target where the noise is actually entering from, instead of just blasting sound in your ear all night. For example, if a small dog starts barking outside your window, this system understands that it needs to block a small dog and starts playing the ideal masking sound for small dogs. Instead of sounding like a noise is playing, it’ll actually sound like rain outside your window.
Sonify Shield installs in under five minutes without any tools: just place the base station near your bed and mount the exciter with onboard adhesives on the wall where unwanted noise comes from, and you are done. For operating, the base station includes onboard controls to toggle between primary preset modes: Sleep, Focus, and Relax. You can also use the mobile app for deeper customizations.
Over time, the AI learns recurring noise patterns in your environment and makes adjustments automatically without needing your interference. Another cool highlight is that the system processes sound locally to classify noise types. Once it identifies the optimal masking frequency, the short clip is deleted for privacy.

The system can also function independently without the mobile app, which is only needed for the initial setup. Wi-Fi is required solely for app-based features, firmware updates, and sleep tracking. The base station also includes three high-power LEDs that simulate a natural 30-minute sunrise, gradually shifting from deep amber (1600K) to warm white (3000K).
Each Sonify Shield kit comes with one base station, two exciters, 8-foot USB-C cables, adhesive mounting pads, and adhesive cable clips for clean routing along your walls, ceilings, and windows. If you wish to buy, it can currently be pre-ordered from Kickstarter for a price of $219.
