Art is never lost, it continues to evolve and take different forms. Handmade by UK-based duo Fung & Bedford for the Danish brand Frandsen, the Sora floating light cherishes the Japanese traditional paper art technique through its form inspired by intricate art. The designers unleashed their creativity in this handcrafted sculptural piece, a tell-tale of traditional Japanese origami art. Opting for a refreshing take on Japanese paper art, the light fixture has a dynamic floating form with a petite, paper-like configuration.

For the Sora’s construction, the designers went for pleated and folded Tyvek, a synthetic paper with waterproof and recyclable qualities that make it an interesting choice of material. Now you must be wondering about the dreamy and ethereal glow emanating from the light. Well, it is the disintegrated effect of the linear LED light that is carefully transfixed within the luminaire’s body and is responsible for producing Sora’s soft and warm glow with an abstract quality.

Origami is the most recognized art form, but what is interesting is how just a piece of paper can inspire someone to create such an otherworldly design that is not only functional but artistic as well. The Sora appears to be unique and ravishing in its appearance. Its admirable proportions display a visible show of an inspiring architectural work.

The light’s horizontal structure is fastened with two cords hanging from the ceiling, and the piece that bulges out on both sides gives it the appearance of a winged creature hovering mid-air.

The art of origami folding technique has never appeared to be this fascinating and the designers continue to incorporate their creative practice in the beautiful Sora floating light. It is a timeless piece of lighting that immaculately marries design and architecture and adapts to any living space.
