Sustainability – environmental, economic, and social – means change, process, and progression. A path the Salone del Mobile.Milano embarked upon some time ago. Salone del Mobile.Milano is the first furnishing and design fair to have gained ISO 20121 certification for sustainable events management, which it was awarded following the 2023 edition, thanks to its efforts to prevent, mitigate, and offset any potential negative effects of the event on the environment and people.

The efforts by the trade fair to embed sustainability into its core business and practices offer a microcosm of the broader global movement towards ethical consumption. Salone is also a member of UN Global Contact, the largest global business sustainability initiative, which encompasses more than 15,000 businesses from over 160 countries around the world.

In order to be a real driver of change, the Salone believes that much still remains to be done at a number of different levels and that it must constantly continue to challenge itself. By continuing to strive for sustainable change, the Salone will constitute a point of reference for the sector as a whole, bringing further value to the trade fair business, and to the people and communities in which it operates. It shares the ten principles of the UN Global Compact which promote the protection of human rights, a more responsible approach to the environment and the fight against corruption in all its various forms, leaving the economical issue in the background.

Salone is the international platform of furniture, where the shift toward sustainable furniture is well visible, representing a vital step in addressing some of the most pressing environmental and social challenges of our time. While economical considerations are important, the ethical implications of our purchasing decisions cannot be overlooked.

Sustainable furniture offers a viable alternative that aligns with the principles of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and long-term economic viability. Beyond environmental concerns, sustainable furniture addresses the social and ethical dimensions of production.

Choosing sustainable furniture has a ripple effect that extends beyond the choices of individual consumers and companies. It contributes to a broader cultural shift towards sustainability, encouraging other industries to adopt similar practices. It also supports the development of a circular economy, where products are designed for longevity, reuse, and recycling, thereby reducing the strain on natural resources and minimizing waste.

As evidenced by the initiatives of Salone del Mobile.Milano, the furniture industry is capable of leading the charge towards a more sustainable and ethical future. By embracing sustainable practices, both producers and consumers can contribute to a more just and sustainable world, where the true cost of a product reflects its impact on people and the planet.

Consumer awareness regarding the environmental and social impacts of their purchases is on the rise. Today’s consumers are more informed and conscientious, seeking products that align with their values. This shift in consumer behavior is driving demand for sustainable furniture and encouraging companies to adopt more ethical practices.

The rise of eco-certifications and labels helps consumers identify genuinely sustainable products, making it easier for them to make informed choices. Brands that invest in obtaining such certifications not only demonstrate their commitment to sustainability but also build trust with their customers.

While sustainable products may have a higher upfront cost, they often prove more cost-effective in the long run. This is due to their durability and the lower maintenance costs associated with high-quality, sustainably sourced materials. Additionally, as consumer demand for sustainable products grows, economies of scale are likely to bring down prices further.

Moreover, sustainable practices can also lead to significant economic benefits for businesses. For example, energy-efficient production processes reduce operational costs and waste reduction strategies can minimize expenses related to waste disposal. Companies that adopt sustainable practices can also enhance their brand reputation, attract environmentally conscious consumers, and gain a competitive edge in the market.

Salone del Mobile.Milano’s sustainability policy underscores expressively the importance of ethical principles such as integrity, honesty, inclusion, and transparency. By committing to these values, Salone sets a standard for others in the industry to follow, demonstrating that ethical considerations can and should be at the heart of business operations.
