Let’s take a detour from American compact housing models to the tiny house industry contributor from the land Down Under. From the land of Kiwis, in particular. New Zealand-based micro-dwelling builder Ruru Tiny Homes has emerged as one of the biggest names in the industry and for good reason. The tiny house models by the builder are exquisite inside-out while breaking free from the typical facades and design styles followed by their counterparts. The Toroa XL tiny house is one such beautiful mobile abode that fits three bedrooms, a big bathroom, a full kitchen, and a spacious living room in a US$140,000 package.

The 40-foot-long micro-dwelling follows suit of the builder’s trademark vertical wooden siding exterior, complemented by the bright and cheerful interior. The Toroa XL is the big brother of the 2-bedroom Toroa tiny house. It is the largest model by Ruru Tiny Homes and boasts a two-story layout that is perfect for a big family.

One striking aspect of the Toroa XL is that it features high ceilings and full standing height on both levels, which is a rarity in tiny houses. Dotted with a myriad of big windows and giant French doors, the interior of the tiny house is light-filled and well-ventilated.

The front doors open into the kitchen, which packs a wallop in an L-shaped design. Although compact, the kitchen is outfitted with wooden countertops, a four-burner cooktop, oven, dishwasher, sink, multiple cabinets, and space for a full-sized refrigerator. There is plenty of space for a movable island or a modular dining table in the kitchen as well.

On one side of the kitchen, a ground-floor bedroom fits a king-size bed, a couple of nightstands, and a separate entrance. The other side features an open storage staircase leading to the upper level, a living room, and a bathroom at the end of the house.

The staircase boasts open shelves toward the kitchen and the living room, which is quite convenient. The living room features a couch, a chair, a side table, and a television unit facing the sofa. Past this space, a bathroom is neatly tucked behind a pocket door. The bathroom of the Toroa XL is one of the most spacious ones we’ve seen so far. It comes with a giant glass-enclosed shower cabin, toilet, and vanity sink. There is plenty of room here to install a freestanding bathtub and place a washer/dryer hookup.

On the upper level, two lofts are connected via a carpeted walkway. One of the lofts has a queen-size bed, two nightstands, multiple windows, and a carpeted floor. The second loft bedroom is a slightly bigger one. It nicely fits a sofa, which can easily be swapped for another queen-size bed, a coffee table, a queen-size bed, a nightstand, and a handful of windows.

The Toroa XL tiny house perfectly embodies the principles of the tiny house movement in a neat package that caters to growing families at a reasonable price. Admittedly, it still sits on the slightly expensive side, however, the layout, the ingenious use of space, and with room to grow, Toroa XL certainly is worth its salt.
