Danish design brand Mater has launched the Ocean Collection that re-imagines the original 1955 chair and table design by the renowned designer couple, Jørgen and Nanna Ditzel. With regard to its sustainability, the collection is made largely from ocean waste plastic, one of the most important environmental challenges the planet is facing. Just like the original designers, Mater wanted the new furniture collection to focus on ethical and sustainable production criteria they have followed.
Dennie Ditzel, daughter of Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel in collaboration with Mater has come up with the sustainable and innovative solution of utilizing discarded fishnets and hard plastic waste from the ocean for furniture design. Characterized by its light structure with repeated slats and metal frames, the Ocean Collection consists of chairs and tables, intended for outdoor use.
Motivating the design industry toward more and more sustainable projects, each Ocean Chair uses 960 grams of ocean plastic waste. With concrete grey and black finishing, the material does not look like plastic; rather it adds a unique character to the design. The metal frame is painted in Gun Metal color.

The Ocean Collection is designed with disassembly in mind, allowing the each component to be recycled into new production circles. The company is hoping to encourage fishermen from across the world to dispose of their discarded fishing nets to the upcycling facility in Denmark. This inventive outdoor furniture collection is also awarded the Wallpaper* Magazines Design award earlier this year.
