Rapidly rising deforestation and its contribution to climate change is concerning. Given the growing climate concerns, many designers are turning towards sustainable practices and eco-friendly materials for their designs. One such designer is Francisco Jaramillo, an award-winning Columbian designer who grew up in Amazon. He shares an appreciation for local materials after experiencing the destructive human practices of indiscriminate lodging, a major issue that the forest faces.

As an alternative to traditional wooden furniture, he designed the Ibuju furniture collection from natural fiber called ‘Yare.’ Yare is a root that grows around the trunks of trees in the Columbian Amazon, harvested by local communities. It is a responsible material that is sustainable and renewable in its nature.

Ibuju furniture collection comprises a bench, a stool, and a coffee table. The collection makes a difference by rethinking and reimagining the design and manufacturing of native wood pieces without cutting down trees. Through profound research and closely working with local artisans, Jaramillo turned to local materials and imparted his knowledge in creating furniture pieces that are functional, suitable for outdoors, and uniquely Columbian.

Jaramillo says, “This is where I try to reference a piece of furniture that could have been constructed from wood, but is now made from a regenerative fiber that solely depends on the tree that could have been felled.”

First in the collection is a bench that follows a weaving pattern, a craft displayed by local weavers and artisans near Medellin, Columbia. The design resembles wooden furniture where three long cylindrical logs are used for the sitting and two for the base. Weighing 30 kilograms, it is available in four sizes.

Next is a beautiful coffee table with a round tabletop and crossed legs for the base. Weighing 40 kilograms, it is handcrafted by a group of weavers using traditional weaving techniques. Third in the collection are stools that nod to the native Amazonian craft.

Through Ibuju furniture collection, the designer aims to bring the growing apprehensions of deforestation in the Amazon to attention. Jaramillo is spreading awareness regarding the utilization and importance of home-grown materials while celebrating the beauty of indigenous craft. This aesthetic collection explores a profound relationship the artisans share with their surroundings and emphasizes the need to preserve biodiversity.
