People wait months and years to book a popular place – a hotel, restaurant, or Airbnb rental – when it is already booked out. The Merry Mushroom is one such vacation rental completely booked out on Airbnb for the rest of the year, except for a couple of slots in April and December, which could be gone as you read this. Well, the popularity of this hobbit home-style lodging is staggering. Located on the western brow of Lookout Mountain, the Merry Mushroom has the markings of a quintessential hobbit house with beautiful surroundings.

This Airbnb is only 25 minutes away from Chattanooga, Tennessee. The whimsical retreat is perfect for Tolkien fans, couples, solo travelers, and nature lovers seeking to embrace the untainted natural beauty. It might not be the best lodging for people who wish to work while on vacation as there is no Wi-Fi at the location, but hey, you really should stop and smell the roses once in a while.

A stone arch with a winding path leads to the Merry Mushroom. With its typical hobbit home with round windows and a green door, the structure evokes the memories of Tolkien’s epic world. The conical rooftop and the entire exterior are covered in wood shingles for an earthy touch bestowing it a look that’s a cross between the hobbit homes and a woodland mushroom.

The façade is impressive but it still doesn’t prepare you for what you find inside. The thoughtfully crafted interior features a living space with a vintage chandelier, two reading chairs, and an electric fireplace to keep the space nice and toasty. Since the lodging has a circular structure, a slightly curved kitchenette is designed so you can cook meals during your stay.

A small dining setup is placed next to one of the round windows. On the other side, a cozy reading nook is designed next to the second round window, with a round opening similar to what we all saw in Bilbo Baggins’s home. A bathroom is adjoining, but it seems that it was designed by the Men as the door is simple. Inside, the bathroom packs modern amenities like a walk-in tiled shower and eco-friendly toiletries.

Outside, behind the living area is an open-floor bedroom. The plush king-size bed provides the front-row seat for outdoor views through the wall lined with floor-to-ceiling windows. There is even a large copper soaking tub for relaxation. Outside the hobbit house, a private lawn, a bluff-side hot tub, and Adirondack chairs by the fireside complete the glamping-style experience.

The prime location offers a perfect blend of peaceful seclusion and convenient access to local wonders and outdoor adventures. There are plenty of restaurants, breweries, and shops in Downtown Chattanooga, only a 25-minute drive away.

Even though the Merry Mushroom is booked for most of 2025, you may still manage to book it for the sparse opening, or starting January 2026. Once you get a chance, you can stay at this enchanting hobbit house for $330 per night.
