Tiny houses are fascinating, but people who take it upon themselves to create these micro-dwellings out of sheer dedication and love are even more so. This is a real-life story of Texas-based mom and content creator Yelithza Heidecker, who wanted her mom, Liliana Villanueva, to live near her place. At first, the couple moved her into an RV placed in the same lot where they were building a 1600-sq-ft three-bedroom, barndominium. After its completion in 2025, the couple planned to give Heidecker’s mom a more permanent space.

The couple tapped local builders for the project, but after hearing the high-priced quotes, they decided to build as much of the home by themselves to keep things under the budget. They have designed the layout themselves but commissioned contractors to build the shell and concrete flooring.

The electrical work was also handled by professionals, while smaller tasks, such as installing the kitchen, painting the house, and putting up the walls, were done mostly by her husband. Heidecker also helped with the project whenever she was free from her four young children.

This 400-square-foot DIY tiny house has a black roof and white exterior walls, making it look like a mini version of the adjacent barndominium. The design includes multiple windows that offer natural light, as well as a covered patio on the front for outdoor living.

The interior layout is designed to her mom’s specific needs. Once inside, you will find an open-concept living area with a leather sofa, printed rug, and plants. Next is the kitchen, featuring an oven, stove, and refrigerator, along with an island and a butcher-block countertop that pairs well with wood cabinets.

The bedroom is located in the back, while the bathroom with laundry area lies just next to it. The bedroom has space for a queen-sized bed, a built-in closet, and a dresser.

The construction of the tiny house was completed in about eight weeks. As noted by CNBC, this tiny home build has been achieved under $33,000, which includes flooring, paint, cabinets, plumbing, electricity, countertops, lighting, insulation, appliances, and more.

The DIY tiny house project is really impressive as it motivates people around the world to pursue their dream of building their own home in a DIY route, no matter if it is just a tiny casita. This way, you can save a lot of money, which can be used to elevate the tiny house even more.
