The decision usually comes down to size when you’re buying a camper trailer. Most people lean toward bigger trailers for the extra space and payload they bring. What they often don’t consider are the trade-offs that come with it: a heftier tow vehicle, higher fuel costs, tougher manoeuvring in tight spots, and more risk for anyone without years of towing experience. New Zealand’s Fortress Trailers takes on that exact trade-off with its latest build, the Fortress Explorer camping trailer, which opens into a two-story base camp with optional awning walls, proving size doesn’t have to come at the cost of practicality.

First reported by New Atlas, the Explorer measures 13.5 feet long and stands 6.9 feet tall, putting it size-wise between the Hardkorr Xplorer Shorty and the standard Xplorer, with a similar tongue-mounted staircase design. It weighs in at 2,500 lbs with a 990-lb payload capacity, a fairly light tow considering everything it packs in.

The trailer’s body is made of aluminium with anti-scratch paint, bolted onto a hot-dipped galvanised chassis that can handle bad roads and nasty weather with ease. Fortress further features 15-inch wheels and electric brakes with an Elecbrake controller for added towing control and safety.

The real USP of the trailer is the roomy pop-up rooftop tent that offers sleeping space for two. Accessed via a built-in staircase on the trailer tongue, the tent features a queen-size memory foam mattress. It also includes multiple storage pockets in the ceiling to house flashlights and other EDC essentials. Not to mention, 12-V lights and windows on both sides with flyscreens, letting in fresh air and a view without inviting bugs along for the ride.

The staircase is a story in itself. It comes with a fold-out extension that brings the steps all the way down to ground level. When folded away for travel, it doubles as a hinged storage lid, with matching clamshell boxes on either side adding even more room for gear. This brings us to the other features, the most important of which are the kitchen and storage.

Fortress Explorer camping trailer features a slide-out kitchen with space for a 90-litre fridge, bench space, and storage for cooking essentials. Other features include a sink with a collapsible basin and a folding faucet. There’s room for a portable stove either on the worktop beside the sink or on a fold-down counter that runs the width of the adjoining pantry, which has enough shelving and cubby space for dry food and cooking essentials.

The Fortress Explorer camping trailer draws power via a 100-Ah battery paired with a 1,000-W inverter and 120-W solar panel, all housed in an electrical cabinet up front. A 100-litre water tank sits low on the chassis and connects to a 12-V pump and an external hose hookup.

The trailer also comes with a range of add-on options, including a swing-out shower tent on the driver’s side and a water heater. Not to mention, a 270-degree awning that unfolds by hand to wrap shade and shelter around most of the trailer in one go. The Fortress Explorer camping trailer is priced at NZ$42,990 ($25,000 approx.) But here is the sad part. It’s only available in New Zealand for the time being.
