Halloween is fun time for all of us, no matter the age. Usually, you find people crafting new home décor pieces, setting up Halloween displays, and preparing creepy delicacies up to the festivity. This year public celebrations and festivities have been subdued due to COVID-19, but that isn’t stopping people from celebrating in their own unique ways. Case in point, this spooky playhouse makeover by Anna and Adam Frazier from Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Being devoted Halloween enthusiasts, they enjoy creating elaborate Halloween decorations for trick-or-treaters in their neighborhood. Inspired by a few playhouse makeovers seen on Pinterest, Anna got the idea of creating a Halloween-themed playhouse as a unique addition to their yard this year.

The couple managed to get a playhouse from someone who was parting with it free of charge and thus began the journey of this DIY haunted playhouse project. Adam disassembled the entire playhouse and spray painted each piece with a plastic-specific paint, while Anna handcrafted nearly all decorative items, including the custom skull sconces, the front door wreath, and the sinister window planter box.

The skull sconces were made from plastic skulls and then attached to the painted wooden plaques. For a personal touch, the mini wreath on the playhouse was matched with the wreath on Frazier’s front door that Anna had created last Halloween. The glowing witch cauldron, featured inside the playhouse, was created using a plastic cauldron, LED lights, a fake snow blanket, and clear plastic Christmas ornaments.

Since making miniature things is really hard, it was no different for Anna, she struggled making the sinister plants. For this, she began by building a basic structure for the plants by gluing smooth Styrofoam balls to dowel rods. All the details to the head of the flowers were created using a hot glue gun.

The plant heads were painted in four different shades of green and then some artificial leaves and olive green chenille stems were added. For the window box, a wood box was painted and then a block of Styrofoam was glued inside. The final plant miniatures were then glued onto the Styrofoam block and artificial moss was placed on top.

After all the pieces dried, Adam reassembled the playhouse. He was also able to hollow out the chimney to fit a tube that connected to a small fog machine. This makes the coolest visual element of this spooky playhouse.
