Architecture studio ZHA has teamed up with the Spanish design brand Nagami to create the Echo Chair collection. These voluptuous chairs are made from recycled industrial waste, including single-use plastic items used in hospitals. ZHA and Nagami give new life to materials that would otherwise end up in the landfills.

Every chair is made using advanced 3D printing technology. Instead of creating separate parts and putting them together with screws, the 3D printer makes the whole chair in one single, continuous line.

The plastic fluid flows out of the printer to build the seat, base, and backrest all at the same time. The chair’s surface has a neat, ribbed texture thanks to the process, lending it a great tactile quality.

The concept behind the design comes from sound echoes. The designers wanted one side of the chair to look like a repetition or mirror of the other side. The backrest curves gently down toward the floor, while the seat arches upward to wrap comfortably around the sitter. It looks like a flowing sculpture rather than a normal piece of furniture.

The collection comes in four different colors inspired by subtle tonal transitions found in nature. There is a Clean White version and a Solid Black version that combine rPETG with glass fiber, giving the pieces structural reinforcement. There is also a Gradient version that changes from white to see-through, and a Warm Caramel version incorporating rPETG with natural cork composite.

Measuring 21 x 25 x 27 inches, the Echo chair proves that sustainable furniture can also look highly luxurious, elegant, and modern. As reported by Dezeen, the Echo Chair is currently on public display at the LONDON CREATES exhibition taking place at The Truman Brewery until 26 July.
