It seems the Google PR team is having a rough day at the office. The company is already facing criticism and complaints, and leaks are exacerbating the situation. After Google’s Gemini-Powered smart speaker was leaked last week, Android Headlines has done another scoop on Google’s Nest lineup. As per the blog, Google’s Nest devices are slated for a substantial refresh in 2025. This includes significant upgrades to Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, and Nest Doorbell devices, all featuring 2K HDR resolution, advanced AI integration, and new color options.

The timing of this refresh is strategic, coinciding with Google’s Gemini for Home initiative, which aims to create a more intelligent and interconnected smart home environment. After a four-year hiatus since their last significant update, Google’s Nest lineup is set to receive upgrades in video quality, alongside the introduction of new features in the smart home ecosystem.

As reported by Android Headlines, the 2025 Nest update will support 2K resolution, a step up from the current 1080p models. This upgrade promises sharper video quality, improved low-light performance, and enhanced digital zoom capabilities, with the indoor camera offering up to 6x digital zoom. The blog also points out that the new cameras will include a Zoom and Crop feature, allowing users to focus on specific areas of the camera feed, as well as local fallback storage capable of holding up to an hour of footage in case Wi-Fi connectivity is lost. These improvements address longstanding user frustrations with video quality and integration. The refreshed lineup also extends event preview storage from one hour to three hours, providing users with more comprehensive access to recorded events.

Another key highlight of the upcoming Nest devices is their integration with Google’s Gemini AI, which promises to enhance functionality with smarter automation and advanced features, such as object detection and voice interaction. This move signals Google’s intent to revitalize its smart home offerings, addressing user complaints about outdated hardware and positioning Nest to compete with rivals like Amazon’s Ring and Apple’s HomeKit in the rapidly evolving smart home security system market.

Visually, the new Nest devices maintain a familiar design but introduce fresh color options to appeal to a broader audience. The Nest Cam Indoor will be available in Snow (white), Berry (red), and Hazel (gray), while the Nest Cam Outdoor comes in Snow and Hazel. The Nest Doorbell adds a Linen (beige) option alongside Snow and Hazel. The Verge quotes Android Headlines, suggesting Google may rebrand its Nest Aware and Aware Plus subscriptions as Google Home Premium and Google Home Premium Advanced, potentially integrating exclusive Gemini features, though details on pricing and specific offerings remain unclear.

As noted in Digital Trends, the introduction of these upgraded devices comes as Google seeks to reinvigorate its position in the smart home sector, where competitors have been rapidly advancing. Despite the promising upgrades, distrust persists among former Nest users. Nevertheless, the leaked features suggest Google is committed to addressing these concerns with meaningful improvements, potentially debuting the new lineup as early as late 2025, timed with its hardware events.
