There is an increasing trend for furniture that serves multiple purposes, and this shelf design by Chinese furniture designer Ren Yu is a cool example of the same. Named Hourglass, it is a multifunctional furniture unit that expresses the design concept of “one plus one is greater than two.” The shelf can also be used as a lamp and coat rack that makes it even more useful at home.
Inspired by the design of time-hourglass, this shelf has three levels. The first two are shelves while the topmost is meant to hold a removable lamp. In the morning, it can be a “coat rack”; at noon, it can be used as a “shelf”; and at night, it can be used as a “floor-standing lamp”. These different functions of the shelf remind people to follow the direction of time and perceive the beauty of life.

The Hourglass shelf comprises three colored stainless steel bars and two environmental protection plates of different sizes as the laminate. Laminate and stainless steel bars are connected with angle iron screws. The screw at the top of the rack can be used to hang coats.
