When we think of living room tables, we usually imagine hard materials like wood, glass, or marble. However, at the 2026 3daysofdesign, a design studio decided to break from the conventional. Montreal-based studio Atelier Fomenta caught everyone’s eye by showcasing a collection of tables made entirely from industrial rubber.
The theme of the 2026 edition was “Make This Moment Matter,” focusing on meaningful designs that challenge how we look at everyday objects. Atelier Fomenta did exactly that with its Rubber Tables. Founded by designers Julia Arvelo, Florence Barnabé, and Muriel Bentolila, the studio loves experimenting with common industrial materials.
The Rubber Tables explore a unique balance between flexibility and solidity. Instead of using complex machinery, the designers handcrafted each piece with simple tools borrowed from leatherworking. The studio uses thick sheets of industrial black rubber, which are smooth and heavy.
The rubber sheets are draped over cylindrical base forms, making the edges hang naturally like a tablecloth. To give the tables strength, the folded rubber sheets are fixed tightly with strong aluminum rivets, metal pins to hold parts together.

While rubber might seem too soft to hold anything, the studio’s clever pinching and folding techniques make the structures surprisingly rigid. The inherent elasticity of the rubber allows it to flex under pressure but safely maintain its shape, easily supporting everyday items.
By bringing these unique black tables to the global stage in Denmark, Atelier Fomenta proved that functional design need not rely on traditional wood or metal. Available in small, medium, and large sizes, these made-to-order pieces offer a playful texture to modern interiors. They remind us that creativity often comes from looking at industrial materials in a completely new way.
