How to Make Your Kitchen Renovation Look Professional

The main reason homeowners adopt a ‘do-it-yourself approach’ for home renovations and design is the cost barriers associated with hiring a professional. For some aspects of home renovating (including electrical and plumbing work), professional assistance is a necessity; however, there are also some tasks homeowners can handle by themselves without fail.

If you’re working on a do-it-yourself (DIY) kitchen renovation, there are subtle touches you can incorporate to make your project look as it was done by professionals. Here are a few ideas to get started with your own home renovation without any hassles.

Use RTA Kitchen Cabinets

Using (ready-to-assemble) RTA cabinets is more beneficial than custom-made cabinetry as it can reduce costs by giving you the option of doing it by yourself. You simply need to measure your kitchen and keep looking for reasonably priced and aesthetically pleasing RTA kitchen cabinets.

Alternatively, you can go through the brochures of different companies, and choose one that best suits your style and space. When selecting kitchen cabinetry, you should also take into consideration ease-of-setup, finishes and hardware. They have been around for a long time and have become a practical option for homeowners looking to create a personalized kitchen on a budget.

If you are having trouble deciding on the overall decor scheme of your kitchen, you can simply order some door samples to arrange with countertop, paint and fabric swatches, or backsplash tiles to get a better feel of what you like. This will also allow you to see and feel the product in person, limiting discrepancies (color, size, design and look) that sometimes result from viewing on a computer screen.

Coordinate with Kitchen Backsplash

A backsplash in a kitchen is the ideal place to show off your personal style. When choosing a backsplash, it is very important to select the choice materials wisely according to your needs. From copper and steel to ceramic, marble and stone; there are a number of kitchen backsplash design ideas you can find online or at physical stores. If you want your kitchen to look appealing for longer, you can go for a durable and easy to clean material. Those craving for only looks can go for stone, glass, ceramics and patterned tiles.

Having a trendy, professional-looking backsplash is no longer a battle of cutting and laying tiles while getting grout everywhere. Glass, ceramic, granite, and even stone backsplash options in endless styles and colors, along with adhesive backing are the perfect recipe for easy installation. The shapes, colors, and pattern options are endless – you just need to decide the theme.

Your backsplash is meant to be the backdrop for more common features of the kitchen. Rather than being a focal point, it is usually a design element that adds cohesion to the overall space. If you’d rather go for a bold, eye-catching backsplash, it would be ideal to keep your cabinetry and fixtures muted and subtle.

Faucets and Fixtures

Swapping out faucets and fixtures for higher-quality options is an affordable way to upgrade your kitchen and make it look as though you’ve hired a designer. It’s also something you can delay until the funds are available or you find a suitable design theme.

When shopping for a new kitchen faucet, you should consider both style and functionality. You should also be aware of the size of the water pipe, shutoff valves and space availability. The number and location of the faucet mounting holes is also a considerable factor.

In addition to ease of installation, the color and style of the faucet also affect the looks of a kitchen. A professional-looking kitchen faucet should complement the finish of sink, countertop, cabinets and other cooking accessories.

If you’re replacing something that was added during the original construction of your home, it would feel like an upgrade. However, high-quality faucets that are often on clearance (that don’t sell during peak season) can also add professional essence. The models don’t change much over time, so purchasing something from the previous season still looks modern and chic.

Space Optimization

Professional designers and contractors have a knack for identifying wasted space and optimizing it to increase storage or make the room feel larger. Thus, before you start your renovation kitchen project, mark these areas and utilize them accordingly.

The space between the wall and fridge can hold a narrow trundle shelf for spices while space above the cabinets or table can be converted into an overhead shelving unit. Drawing a rough floor plan of available space will make it easier to define spaces for separate features. The way your kitchen is designed decides how efficiently it will be used.

You also need to find ways to improve the flow of the room. Note down things you hate about your current kitchen, not just in terms of aesthetics but also the functionality. Now is the time to move the dishwasher, so it doesn’t hit the stove when both are open, and address other minor inconveniences.

If you have a kitchen island that blocks space more than it helps, plan on removing it or changing its location. Use a room arranging app if you struggle with planning and visualization.

Take Your Time

The more time you devote to remodeling more professional your kitchen will look. It is not a weekend-project and can take several weeks or months to complete. Professionals can work quickly because they have the knowledge and skills to do so. You should expect yourself to take much longer to complete the same task with similar standards.

When you want something bigger than your budget, you have to do a lot of research and think like a professional to find interesting new ways of creating your own personalized kitchen.

Adhering to each of these steps can help you remodel your kitchen in a professional style. If it is getting hard, you can always call a professional for help.
