Lia Griffith is an inspiration of mine. She is an internationally renowned DIY designer, stylist, and creative director – to name a few of her attributes. I first came across one of her amazing crafts about five years ago and loved her instantly. She is the craft queen who has created tons of craft project tutorials, printables, and a myriad of inspirations on her website and YouTube channel.

She has her line of crepe papers, frosted tissue papers, holiday DIY kits, and a line of tools; imparting her paper crafting wisdom to the world and inspiring amateur craft lovers such as yours truly. Her earliest memory of paper crafting is when she was six and made two tissue paper dolls. Thus began the journey of creating beautiful things from inexpensive materials such as paper, cardboard, felt, and the list goes on.

Since I have been following her channel religiously, it made me curious about her holiday celebrations. So I got in touch with her team to get a glimpse into how Lia celebrates her Christmas.

But before we get to Christmas fun, it is difficult to not ask her about her trade. When asked if everyone could be creative, Lia said affirmatively. “One of my business mantras is ‘Everyone can be creative.’ I realized this when I was teaching art at a Waldorf school and was surprised at how the kids could so easily explore their creativity without inhibition. As I grew older and moved through my creative career, I noted that as adults, we often forget our creative spirits. We are, as humans, born to create. So yes, everyone can be creative.”

Lia has been teaching crafting and creativity for a decade now and she has loved how naturally it comes to her. However, she does find it somewhat challenging to find time for a creative outlet for herself since much of her working time goes into teaching and curating tutorials.

Given her expertise in crafts, it’s easy to mistake her as the master papercrafter; but she is quite adept in drawing, pottery, embroidery, salsa dancing, and gardening. All of which she shares with the world through her classes.

Since it is Christmas, I wanted to ask about her holiday decorations and favorite foods. I mean, how could I not be inquisitive? She replies, “My favorite Christmas thing is to put a wreath on my front door. It brings a warm and cozy feeling before walking into the house. I choose natural materials and handmade items from my front door wreath to my holiday tree and every holiday decoration throughout my space. You can see examples of this on my website.”

Lia has created crepe paper wreaths and felt wreaths, in varying shades of holiday decorations to evoke different moods. Taking about her favorite Christmas food she told us, “My favorite savory food items for the winter holidays would include mushrooms. I love a pile of homemade buttery mashed potatoes smothered in roasted garlic mushroom gravy.” She calls it Christmas heaven.

Given how much she loves to create, it came as no surprise to know that she makes most of her Christmas decoration items and has been saving every year of holiday crafts to add to her ever-growing collection. The only festive articles that she shops for are string lights, battery-operated candles, and glass ball ornaments to mix and match things.

While creative people like Lia began their holiday preparations well in advance, there are many laid-back people as evidenced by search spikes for last-minute Christmas tree decorations in December. To help those stragglers, the master crafter gives a handful of tips.

“Pick a theme for your Christmas tree. It could be a garden theme or even a children’s tree. With this theme in mind, look for fun and quick items that you can make with the materials you have on hand. What one can do with just a flat piece of paper is impressive—paper bows, chains, ornaments, and, of course, my specialty, paper flowers. You can also look into your kitchen and string popcorn, cranberries, and thinly sliced oranges to dry and hang.”

Lia’s mantra of ‘inspire, teach, and reignite creativity’ has only spread like wildfire, inspiring hundreds of thousands of people to create joy from things as simple and trivial as paper. This glimpse into her Christmas has only fueled my desire to be more and more creative each day.

I thank you Lia Griffith for sparing the time for this inspirational and merry conversation!

Listening to her grandmother weaving nighttime tales to penning down her own thoughts, Priya developed a penchant for stories and their origin early in her childhood. After her master's in literature, she started writing copiously on diverse topics including architecture, interior design trends, and home improvement while learning the ropes of copyediting. For the past couple of years, she has been crafting DIYs for Homecrux. Reading novels, painting, and baking are her favorites on her long list of hobbies. She also loves to eat, travel, meet new people, learn about different cultures, and listen to stories.
