When it comes to completely hard-walled rooftop tents, there are only a few options, including Mammoth Overland’s SKL, Dark Barrack’s hard-shell rooftop tent (RTT), and Redtail Overland’s rooftop camper that comes pre-integrated with the Skyloft van. One common problem these wedge-style RTTs face is the limited headroom and interior space, which has been creatively solved in the ALTUS hardwall rooftop cabin developed by adventure gear brand Mohab. The maker has opted for a cube shape to provide more interior space, along with a powered pop-up system for easy setup.

ALTUS is aptly described as a “cabin” because of its creative, four-walled design and functionality. Unlike wedge or clamshell tents that slope at one end, it uses a scissor-lift system to raise the roof vertically across its entire length. This creates a rectangular shape with similar headroom throughout the interior, much like the vertical walls of a small cabin or room. There is an onboard push-button, electric open and close system that gets the camp ready in under 60 seconds.

Each cabin measures 93.11 inches long, 53.94 inches wide, and an open height of 44.88 inches. It is also available in XL size, with dimensions of 101 x 54 inches (257 x 137 cm). Mohab says both models accommodate two adults and a child or pet, although New Atlas points out it might get tight to sleep three people on a 50-inch-wide mattress.

With about 45 inches of height across the entire floor, there is no possibility to stand inside, but two people can comfortably sit upright on the mattress. One specific case is when the roof is lifted, you can freely stand on one side of the camper.

The ALTUS hardwall rooftop cabin features four aluminum alloy frames paired with PET heat- and scratch-resistant walls, keeping its weight at 265 lbs (120 kg), while the XL model goes up to 276 lbs (125 kg). These models are comparably lighter than the Mammoth Overland SKL rooftop camper, which weighs approximately 300 pounds (136 kg).

These materials also ensure year-round comfort and protection, while A/C and heat ports are included to better deal with harsh weather. Another major highlight is slider windows and a lift-up panoramic roof that offers better views than any rooftop tent.

The Mohab rooftop camper is designed for a wide range of trucks and SUVs. Unlike universal rooftop tents that might clip onto standard crossbars, the ALTUS hardwall rooftop cabin is designed specifically to work with Mohab’s proprietary Fortis rack systems. This means it is compatible with only those vehicles that can support those specific racks. It is currently compatible with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-150, Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Toyota Land Cruiser.

The Altus rooftop cabin with pickup bed rack is priced at $5,139. It is $6,049 for the Altus with a truck cap, while the Altus with a 4×4 rack costs $4,869.
