Nendo’s andon Lantern Table Pays Tribute to Japanese Paper Lamp

Coffee table lamp is designed to illuminate the floor and its surroundings.

The Japanese design studio, Nendo was at its prime when it designed the spherical Olympic cauldron with hydrogen flames for the Tokyo Olympiad. Since then, it has come up with many projects but hasn’t achieved the same success again. At Salone del Mobile 2022, Nendo founder Oki Sato and the team will try to revive its past glory with their latest coffee table design that doubles as a lamp.

From the pictures one would assume it to be a trash bin or a storage chest. However, it is a classic Nendo table with the top plate functioning as a surface for working, eating, and keeping things.

What steals the limelight is the underside of the top plate that produces light and illuminates the surrounding, just like a lantern would. In fact, the name of the table is derived from an ancient lantern used in Japan.

It’s thus dubbed andon (Japenese for paper lantern). The coffee table lamp collection by the Japanese studio is being showcased at the 60th edition of the Milan Furniture Fair.

The collection features coffee table lamps in square and round shapes to choose from. The tabletop is made of black enameled lava stone with the texture of Nerosicilia that is waterproof just like the parchment-covered lamp.

The andon table can be used in all types of settings and can also be selected as a coffee table without lighting. If you choose the one with lights, you have a nice lantern table combo that is based on the Japanese lifestyle of sitting and sleeping on the floor.
