Duffy London needs no introduction – their quirky and otherworldly furniture designs are enough to spark a conversation. Recently, the design studio collaborated with artist Christopher Wall to create the stunning Pietre coffee table. The furniture piece measuring 4 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 1 feet high is built using the age-old Scagliola technique. For this design, Wall’s in-depth knowledge and passion for the old blend seamlessly with Duffy’s innovative use of algorithmic design technology.

Scagliola is an Italian technique revived in the 17th century during the Renaissance. Generally made from gypsum, glues, and natural pigments, it is considered to be the most effective replica of expensive marble and precious stones, which was not accessible at the time. The elusive method is generally utilized in architecture and sculpture design.

Duffy London has brought together the best of both worlds with modern design technology where the team works with 3D CAD mock-ups to craft different forms and shapes. Using material and fabrication variables, this advanced design tech infuses each piece with life, materiality, and an existence of its own. Instead of curating monotonous pieces crafted in a factory, Duffy London’s Pietre coffee table is a shout in the void.

As Christopher Duffy, founder of Duffy London believes that the Scagliola is a beautiful material that designers have not worked with extensively. He states, “Christopher Wall gave us front-row seats to this ancient and secretive technique, allowing us the opportunity to apply new methods we are just discovering. The results are stunning and also conceptually fascinating, as a passed down knowledge that is now breaking new ground.”

Boasting an elemental quality, the coffee table’s design excites us and the details make us curious. The 3D designs serve as a base for Christopher Wall to explore this celestial material for colors, outlines, and marble-like charm. Entirely hand-applied, the design method extends the possibility of creating peculiar forms that have visually appealing colors, making each Pietre coffee table distinct.

Blending the old with the new, the uniqueness of Pietre is continued in the overall shape of the table as it is based on the famous Kronos range, representing the idea of art-furniture pieces taking precedence. The result is an eye-catching coffee table fit for any modern home, or a prized collectible for any design enthusiast.
