California-based startup Polydrops is one of the few manufacturers dedicated to building off-grid travel trailers for EVs. Following the launch of its family-oriented, wedge-shaped P21 travel trailer in 2024, the company is now expanding the lineup with an adventure-focused model. The company has been working on it for many years, and the founder, Kyung-Hyun Lew, has even revealed it to Homecrux in an exclusive interview back in 2023.
Built on the same platform, the new P21X can be highlighted as an off-road-focused upgrade of the P21. However, the main highlight is its redesigned exterior, which ensures even better aerodynamics.
Just like the earlier model, the P21X features a multi-faceted exterior design with tapered ends, but there are some changes on these ends to accommodate more people. The trailer still measures 21 feet (6.4 meters) long, but it has been lifted 4 inches, increasing ground clearance up to 15 inches (38 cm). It uses an independent axle-less suspension and is equipped with all-terrain tires to tackle harsh roads.
To improve the aerodynamics of the taller P21X trailer after height increase, Polydrops has used CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software to refine the trailer’s shape. Fins have been added to the back of the roof to improve airflow, just like a more tapered body, but without reducing the interior space, says New Atlas. The interior height is 6 feet (1.8 m), offering enough standing room for most adults.
Polydrops has also improved the off-grid performance of the P21X camper trailer. The solar setup has been increased to 1,300W from 920W on the P21. The LFP battery bank retains the same 5kWh standard capacity, but you now have an option to increase it to 10kWh. There is also an onboard automation system with a 7-inch touchscreen to monitor the electrical system and other hardware.
The P21X camper trailer follows the interior layout of the P21 model, but in a fixed manner that cannot be modified with modules like the earlier one. There are two V-shaped double beds positioned at opposite ends of the trailer, anchored with a central kitchen. One of them is converted by lowering the table and rearranging the cushions in the dining area located on one end of the trailer. This dining area converts into a 58 x 80 inches (147 x 203 cm) bed at night. The bedroom at the other end is a fixed sleeping space designed for children.
The kitchen is designed on both sides of the trailer, with one side featuring a countertop with an integrated sink. The opposing side serves as the cooking area with an induction cooktop and microwave.
Polydrops has opted for a no-wall bathroom, creating a makeshift space covered with curtains for privacy. The bathroom module is concealed inside the central aisle’s lounge bench seating. Other highlighting features include a 10,000-BTU AC unit with a heat pump, a 1.3-gallon (5-liter) 1,440W water heater, and a 9-gallon (34-liter) freshwater tank.
Polydrops P21X camper trailer weighs 2,100 lbs (953 kg), which is heavier than the earlier P21 model but is still compatible with a variety of vehicles, including EVs. It is a limited-edition trailer that will be made in only 20 numbers. If you wish to buy, pricing starts from $76,900 at the Polydrops official website.
