Shift Perspective, a furniture studio based in Cape Town, South Africa is known for making limited edition furniture. Robben Island Coffee Table is their latest creation inspired by 18 years of imprisonment of the South African revolutionist Nelson Mandela during the Apartheid regime at the Robben Island. They’ve made only 18 of these unique tables to commemorate each year Mandela spent on the island.
Robben Island Coffee Table measures 1200L x 600W x 400H mm and is made from large casts of resin on wood. The design team at Shift Perspective worked for over two years to finalize the prototype of the table. After a series of tests, they took some serious decisions including fine-tuning the resin height, to achieve elegant features in a lightweight table.
Its top is engraved with Robben Island with a map of streets and important buildings on the island and the legs are designed to display the layers seen on the contours of the table. The contour design of the ocean floor has been imitated on the tabletop, making it look like a lagoon table.
A glass pane is placed on the top of the resin to finish the table. It protects the resin and makes the table easy to clean. Three miniature ships cast from solid Sterling Silver are placed on the tabletop, which can be moved around the table.
