Roche Bobois has recently launched a rectangular dining table with a base made from 3D printed concrete that can be customized online by the buyer. Named Corail, it allows the company to offer customers different design choices online. The table is designed to “change the relationship both between consumers and design and between the industry and its distribution,” the official website notes.

Designed by Antoine Fritsch and Vivien Durisotti, this 3D printed dining table creates a possibility for customers to use the design software at home or with an in-store advisor to help craft the object. They can choose the shape and size for the base, decide the occurrence of a weaving effect, and view their design in real-time.

The base’s characteristics are saved in a “genetic code” that feeds a giant printer. It 3D prints concrete in a continuous upwards movement with the digitally operated nozzle, dispensing a ribbon of UHPC (ultra-high performance concrete) that hardens in the course of layering.

The Corail dining table takes inspiration from polypore fungi incrusted in trees, coral colonies on a reef, or giant baroque shells. It is inspired by the beauty of natural imperfection and gives freedom of imagination to its perspective owner.
