The US-based company Backcountry Containers has completed a two-story house built from shipping containers located in a rural area of Vermont. Nestled amid forested landscape, the rugged all-black exterior of the Vermont Villa reveals a spacious modern interior. The industrial facade beautifully contrasts the refined and airy interior. The villa features a custom-built 20-foot SaunaPlunge container where dwellers can relax and rejuvenate under open sky, enveloped by lush greenery.
The two-story house features three 20-foot shipping containers and one 40-foot container forming different living zones, followed by the custom-built 20-foot SaunaPlunge container. The monochromatic all-black exterior transforms the container house into a chic industrial masterpiece, elevating it beyond a simple collection of stacked metal boxes.
Designed with a Jekyll-and-Hyde approach, the raw utilitarian aesthetic of the weather-resistant steel walls contrasts sharply with its modern, bright interior. Inside, the rugged cargo exterior is completely forgotten and replaced by a surprisingly polished and warm sanctuary. The floor-to-ceiling glazing provides beautiful views of the rural landscape and natural light.
A large wooden deck has been integrated to extend from the front of the house. It expands the living space and provides an al-fresco dining and lounging area. The warm, organic tone of the wooden deck softens the industrial look of the house and helps form a direct connection with the outdoors. The mini metal staircase on the deck leads to the plunge pool and a semi sauna located adjacent to it. Four people can easily relax in the sauna, while eight people can use the plunge pool together.
The rooftop deck outside the bedroom forms an elevated vantage point, offering panoramic views of a Vermont forest. The industrial shell fades, and an incredibly spacious interior welcomes residents with an open-plan layout, offering fluid movement without restrictions. You can access the upper floor through the spiraled staircase, which looks like an architectural sculpture.
The villa has two living rooms, dining zones, two bedrooms, and a fully functional kitchen with plenty of cabinetry and floating shelves for storage. The black sink and stovetop serve as bold visual elements that contrast against the light countertop, neutral walls, and light wooden floor. The main bathroom has a shower room with floating shelves, a black bathtub, a vanity sink, and a flushing toilet.

One of the defining traits of interior lies in the bold use of black accents to provide a sophisticated structural detail. The intentional use of black creates a modern outline effect that visually separates different zones. These black accents on window mullions, kitchen appliances, knobs, bathroom ware, and furniture effortlessly guide the eye from one functional zone to the next.
The Vermont Villa is a distinct shipping container house that elevates a tiny living space into a luxury estate. The custom sauna and pool container is the most notable feature of the two-story house that separates it from other container houses.
