Projectors are found a dime a dozen these days. Whether it’s CES or IFA, companies don’t shy away from announcing a new model or an upgraded version of an existing projector. But it’s quite odd when a brand that expertises in areas outside of home entertainment tries to make room for itself in what is already a crowded market. We are talking about Leica, a global manufacturer of high-end cameras and lenses. The German company is now deviating attention to building high-end projectors.

Nearly two years after brandishing its maiden 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector, Leica has officially launched the Cine Play 1, a new home cinema projector, to be made available worldwide. This compact 4K model features an RGB laser light source and supports image projections up to 300 inches. To be honest, that’s nowhere close to the likes of Epson, BenQ or HiSense but Leica has a legacy behind it. Its strength lies in its sharp lens, which even the likes of Epson or BenQ would find hard to rival.

“The Leica Cine Play 1 delivers stunning 4K visuals with outstanding image brightness and vibrant colors, thanks to the combination of Triple RGB laser technology, Leica Image Optimization (LIO™) and the Leica Summicron lens,” states the company.

On the technical front, the Cine Play 1 offers a 3,840 x 2,160 pixel resolution with pixel-shifting support. The DLP-based projector delivers up to 3,000 lumens of brightness, with a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and full BT.2020 color space coverage. It also supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG. The VIDAA U7.6 operating system gives access to popular streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+, and features Apple AirPlay for screen mirroring.

Akin to Yaber’s K3 Pro and Dangbei’s Freedo, the Cine Play 1 is designed as a mini-projector, measuring 10.3 x 9.5 x 9.0 inches with a Bauhaus-inspired aesthetic. The projector sits on an adjustable tilting base for flexible projection angle adjustments. It’s crafted from premium materials and flaunts a one-piece aluminum body that hosts a sleek glass front and aluminum rear panel. Combined, glass and aluminum not only provide durability to the projector but also make it appear stylish.

As is the case with modern-day 4K projectors, Cine Play 1 can also be controlled via voice commands and includes HDMI 2.1, USB 3.0, and S/PDIF ports for external device connections. Additional features include a gaming mode and two built-in 10W speakers. The Leica Cine Play 1 is only available in Australia, at the time of writing, and is priced at AU$5,990, with an optional Floor Stand available for AU$790.
