Denmark’s annual design event, 3daysofdesign, is underway in its 2025 edition. In the short span of 12 years since its inception, the event has surpassed many established design festivals to become one of the most anticipated in the industry. This year’s theme, “Keep it Real,” will explore the intricate weave of individual expression, sustainability, human creativity, and craftsmanship with cultural and social heritage.

The 2025 edition of the design festival in Copenhagen has brought over 400 exhibitors together, creating Scandinavia’s most important meeting platform for the furniture and interior industry. Amid a focus on a conscious approach to design, mid-century modern design is headlining the 3daysofdesign 2025 edition. The event, running from June 18 to June 20, includes exhibitions, installations, talks, and workshops exploring the juncture of mid-century design with modern styles and sustainable practices.

Mid-century modern design still remains popular in furniture and interior design after some 75 odd years since its beginning. Its clean lines, natural materials, and iconic silhouettes continue to find a place in residential and commercial spaces.

Warm Nordic

Danish design brand Warm Nordic, rooted in Scandinavian design history, brings perfect harmony of timeless craftsmanship and contemporary design to the stage at 3daysofdesign this year. With its belief that good design radiates the quality, warmth, and authenticity of the Nordic spirit while encapsulating the timeless and inclusive appeal across the space and time barrier.

The company is reintroducing two lounge chairs by Henry Schubell, which exhibit the ageless charm of mid-century Scandinavian design, reimagined for modern spaces. At the event, the brand is also hosting international design talks featuring acclaimed experts from the UK, the US, and Italy, exploring the golden age of Mid-Century Modern design.

Crossover With Danish Design

For the uninitiated, many pioneers of Danish design, like Hans J. Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, and Børge Mogensen, changed not only Danish design but the global industry with their mid-century modern design. Each of their designs has stood the test of time, and decades later, their pieces are still in use in modern homes and commercial spaces. It’s safe to say that Danish design and Mid-Century Modern design are heavily influenced by each other, sharing many names.

Another talk with Karen Nepacena, interior designer at Destination Eichler in California and author of the book Midcentury Modern Style, shared secrets for creating captivating mid-century interiors, while exploring the Danish influence in California through designers like Hans Olsen. Titled “Mid-Century Modern: From Design History to Dream Interior,” the talk explored the power of Danish design, how mid-century modern design history transforms mundane spaces into dream interiors.

Inside Norway

A joint exhibition put together by the Norwegian Design Industry, Inside Norway, showcases eleven leading Norwegian brands. Highlighting the best of Norwegian design from Varier, Eikund, Fjordfiesta, Ekornes, LK Hjelle, Northern, Lundhs Real Stone, Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik, Formfin, Hadeland Glassverk, and Jensen Beds, the exhibit aims to highlight the intertwined innovation and craftsmanship that celebrate mid-century modern design.

The joint exhibit features a plethora of furniture, interior, lighting, and textile design. Each object highlights simplicity, sustainability, and quality of Norwegian design, which gained a foothold during the mid-century in the industry. It is marked by functional pieces with organic shapes, innovative materials, clean lines, minimalism, and a strong emphasis on natural elements. The exhibition explores mid-century classics and modern designs alike, reflecting the distinct qualities of Norwegian design.

Significance of Mid-Century Design in 2025

Mid-century modern design holds steadfast in times of turbulence and uncertainty, offering a conscious approach to design with a focus on authenticity and individual expression. The overarching theme of 3daysofdesign 2025, Keep It Real, aligns with these values of one of the most popular design styles to ever exist in interior, architecture, and furniture.

At the event, many designers and producers are bringing back or reinterpreting the classic mid-century elements with modern twists, including bold colors, high-quality materials, and updated forms to meet the demands of modern households or commercial spaces. Mid-century design style aligns with growing interest in sustainable design, making vintage and reproduction pieces appealing in modern times.
