Dutch custom RV manufacturer Tonke is well-known for its wood-style camper van builds and EV conversions. Previously, it came into the limelight for converting Volkswagen ID.Buzz into a camper van with a pop-up sleeper roof. Continuing its legacy, the brand is launching the new Basecamp model based on the recently updated Volkswagen T7 Transporter. The most interesting thing about this RV is that it comes in a variety of powertrain options to suit the needs of different users.

Tonke has not revealed many details yet, but plans for official release in May 2026. However, judging from the current preview, you can expect the Basecamp van to be available in three powertrain options for the Volkswagen Transporter. You can go for the all-electric version, the plug-in hybrid variant, or the diesel engine variant.

Tonke says you’ll get multiple engine choices, but does not clarify which ones will be available with this model. This detail is important because Volkswagen gives users many options for its base van. One example is the electric version that comes in three power levels. The buyers must be aware of what they will be getting, making it an important consideration while making the purchase decision.

As highlighted by New Atlas, the van shares a base with the Ford Transit Custom, so Tonke’s camper van will compete with Ford-based camper vans like the Ford Nugget PHEV. They will offer similar power of around 229 hp and about 35 miles (56 km) of electric-only driving range. Volkswagen also offers a more advanced camper, the Volkswagen California eHybrid 4Motion, which offers better range, but it is built on a different van platform. On the other hand, the Transporter’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engine comes in 109-, 148-, and 168-hp tunes.

Tonke confirms that 4Motion all-wheel-drive will also be available on the Basecamp, but there is no information on whether it will be offered with the TDI, electric, or both. There is also no mention of whether the camper van will be based on a short- or long-wheelbase option.

Tonke Basecamp is designed to sleep four people, with a convertible lower bed measuring 79 x 39 inches (200 x 100 cm) and a 91 x 47-inch (230 x 120 cm) roof bed. The cabin serves as a lounge area with four seats and an extendable dining table during the day.

The photo on the Basecamp landing page looks like Tonke’s older T6.1 van, but it hints that the new camper van will retain the same kitchen setup. The van will also include a 60-liter water tank, water heater, and 80-liter fridge/freezer for all-season, off-grid living. There is also an underfloor heating system and an integrated power system for off-grid living.

Details about the Tonke Basecamp are still scarce, and you have to wait for the official release to learn more details. As the T6.1-based Van camper van currently lists at a base of €50,668 (about US $59,400) before VAT, you can get a guess of its pricing as well.
