To revisit history and celebrate some of the most iconic names in furniture design and art, VITRA and Herman Miller have collaborated with Eames Studio and Saul Steinberg estate to produce 500 pieces of the Fiberglass Armchair with Steinberg Cat.

This iconic furniture item was first produced by Charles and Ray Eames as the ‘Eames Shell Chair’ in 1950. Right after its production, the Eames facility was visited by the couple’s artist and architect friend Saul Steinberg. Steinberg in his painting frenzy (during his visit, he was documented painting recklessly around Eames office with a paintbrush), drew a cat sleeping on the Shell Chair, which the Eameses thought had found its perfect space and carried it in their design.

The historic chair has rested in its allure ever since. To give all appreciators a chance to take one of these iconic pieces in history home, VITRA and Herman Miller are releasing 500 limited edition fiberglass armchairs adorned with Steinberg’s cat drawing, in exact dimensions and size.

To transpose this model into an exact shape, the vintage example was scanned and its 3D file was generated so an exact art can be made on the fiberglass shell. Each revisited chair is meticulously hand painted to scale by skilled artists using paintbrushes, which have also been distinctly evaluated to be as close as possible to the original in size and color.

To maintain exclusivity and uniqueness, each re-created Eames Fiberglass Armchair with Steinberg Cat is exclusively numbered and features logos of Vitra and Herman Miller on them. The chairs are available through Vitra and Herman Miller. 180 pieces are available in America for $2,500 each; 300 chairs in Europe and the Middle East (price varies according to market); and the remaining 20 chairs in Japan for roughly the same price as in the US.
