Inflatable Rooftop Tent Lets You Float over Water

Rooftop tents are useful travel accessories that let you create a car-mounted shelter, but they are usually bulkier than traditional tents due to heavy-duty bottom and shell. Making a standard rooftop tent around 2/3 times lighter, the Austria-based company GentleTent launched GT Roof at last year’s Caravan Salon at Düsseldorf. Claimed as world’s first inflatable rooftop tent, it can be placed on the ground, mounted to the roof rack of a vehicle, and even be dragged into the water for a swim on calm waters, just like the SmithFly’s Shoal floating tent we came across earlier.

Made from all-weather fabric by Tencate, the GentleTent’s GT Roof weighs only 25 kg including the telescopic ladder. Mounted to the roof rack of a vehicle with a square aluminum frame and mounting kit, it can be placed both over the rear and laterally on the vehicle. There are windows for fresh air and outside views, while one can include an additional zippered awning too.

On the inside, the lying platform is 220 cm long, 140 cm wide and 130cm high – sufficient enough for tall people. As it comes with a hard floor, you need to use a mattress for sleeping. After packing the entire rooftop tent and accessories in a package of 1 x 1-meter basic dimensions and 10 cm in width, there’s little space to store sleeping bags, blankets or other bedding material.

The GT Roof is easy to install – you just need to remove the cover and inflate the tent with the included 12V electric pump.

Definitely, if it can float like a boat, it is a really cool travel accessory for camping and outdoor enthusiasts as it solves more than just one purpose.

Available in three colors, the inflatable rooftop tent can be bought for about €2,190 ($2,558) after 29 August 2018.
