With sustainability being all the rage right now, many big companies and small-scale manufacturers are focusing on designing products that are smart and sustainable. Enter Oasense, a name I bet you have never heard before. The San Francisco-based startup may be a late entrant in the rumble but its product is a strong competitor to tumble the mightiest of makers in the bath accessories industry.

The San Francisco-based startup Oasense has unveiled Reva, which is an intelligent and self-powered showerhead. But the highlight of the product is its situational, water-saving sensor. As a winner of the 2022 Reddot Design Award and CES Innovation Award, the product has already created hype in the market and may have also left Nebia (a company renowned for making showerheads) scratching its head.

We all love showering, don’t we? But we can’t deny that gallons of water go to waste in the process. Given that it is a fast-depleting resource, this water can be saved with a little diligence. Although there are multiple water-saving showerheads in the market, most of them work around reducing the flow at the source, which means a direct compromise in the user experience. That is where Oasense’s Reva showerhead comes in.

The startup worked on a sensor-based showerhead that detects a person beneath it, meaning it automatically stems water flow when you step back to lather yourself. The shower head sensor tech is powered by a built-in hydro-turbine generator that is connected to an integrated battery. The company doesn’t define the number of sensors integrated.

Talking to IEEE Spectrum, the Co-founder of Oasense Evan Schneider stated, “Two trends are coming together. Sustainability is what everyone has to be about these days, and technology is invading every corner of our homes. Using technology, we designed sustainability into a product that doesn’t compromise quality or the experience, it just addresses the problem.”

While the company touts to reduce the water flow by about 85 percent, hat tip to Earth 911 who tested the product for a month and found that “it reliably reduced water usage and water-heating CO2 emissions by about 51% compared to a standard low-flow showerhead, and by 64% compared to a traditional 2.5 gpm showerhead.”

The showerhead is easily installable to any shower arm. It is a smooth amalgamation of sustainability and smart tech in one and can be purchased at $350 from Oasense.
