However, to build a home single-handedly is scary and challenging as it entails dealing with a lot of things, learning how to do particular tasks and juggling with budgetary restraints. But the brave hearts put those reasons aside and strive for things they want, no matter what it takes. One such story is of French cabinet maker Manon, who decided to self-built her tiny house; and boy, did she do a splendid job. Placing her intrinsic values, freedom, and priorities at the center of it, she has created a home for herself where she lives with her cats, lots of books, and amazing French country view.
Nestled amidst the lush landscape of French countryside, Manon’s self-built tiny house captures the attention with its wooden frame in horizontal and vertical cladding. The design of the compact home has different shapes and heights, giving a raw, unique, and bigger appearance. Its dimensions are 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 14 feet high, with exterior dotted with second-hand windows and a huge entry door to fill the house with natural light.
Thanks to her experience in cabinet making, she found it easier to build the wooden frame; rest, she learned along the way. She currently has her micro-dwelling at a lot offered by a tiny house building company, where she also learned things required to construct the abode. Nine months of hard work from learning plumbing to electricity and roofing, she designed her tiny house to be exceptionally functional.
With a goal to make the space feel more spacious for large gatherings and open to outdoor views, she has built a very bright and cozy living space at the entrance. She has a huge library encompassing the room, colorful tones of decorative items, plants, wooden shoe rack in one corner, a low hanging light, convertible storage-integrated L-shaped sofa, vintage coffee table, and work desk.
She is not much of a fan of foldable or modular furniture, so she went with the furniture that are already in their designated spot, and need no moving around. It is admirable that most of the Items in her house are second-hand such as windows, coffee table, her stove table which was a sewing machine, flooring, and paneling.
Her kitchen is next to the living space. It is an absolute beauty that separates the living room with wooden screen and hanging shelves where she keeps her spices and other cooking essentials. It is a classic kitchen with a countertop on both sides, so she gets a lot of prep space. There is a sink, a red refrigerator, a microwave, drawers, cabinets, and wooden shelves for mugs and glasses. Having a lot of space on both sides for kitchen items and a solar kit behind the drawers on the other side, the kitchen is functional and spacious. Leading from the kitchen is a bathroom. It is another well-designed space in her house featuring a shower, a composting toilet, and cabinets.

Her adorable cat enjoys a space under the stairs – leading to the loft bedroom – with a tiny cat door. The loft is very cozy with comfortable mattress, windows on both sides that let the light in, and arched-shaped roof painted red, giving an impression of more space. There is no railing; instead there is abundant of storage for her board games and bookshelf at the back of her mattress.
It is amazing how strong and enduring a human spirit can be. Manon epitomizes this idea perfectly, as she worked hard for months, learning new skills, and made her dream home possible. She values freedom and authenticity, and it shows through her lovely and humble abode. Costing her $30,000, her self-built tiny house is an embodiment of her quirky, free-spirited, and colorful personality.
